Many years ago an colleague of mine did something to upset a bear. He had heard of the classic advice that you mentioned, climb a tree or play dead. He climbed a tree, but wasn't sure if it worked, so he played dead...and fell out of the tree. The bear was waiting at the foot of the tree. It didn't end well for my colleague. That's why I never go camping.
